During the second part of Fahrenheit 451, Montag and Millie begin to pursue the stolen books he has acquired. As Montag reads, he begins to understand what Clarisse meant when she said that she knew how life is meant to be experienced. However, he does not completely understand the books and needs help in doing so. Montag recalls a meeting last year with an elderly man named Faber who knew a time before books were banned. He remembers that he kept Faber’s phone number and determines that if anyone can help him, he can.
An example of Symbols being used is in Night by Elie Wiesel he says ¨never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a silent sky.¨ These sentences are symbolizing the babies that he saw die and then be burned in the fire. Another example in the book night is “Never shall I forget those flames that consumed my faith forever.” this uses imagery to create a vision in your head of what it was like to be there.
This is a summary of “A Christmas Story” by Annie Dillard. Every Christmas there was a massive dinner held in a seemingly never-ending dining hall. It was lavish and spacious with a table that was as long as a river and was decorated with many different table cloths and decorations. The ceiling of the hall was covered in chandeliers and the floor was filled with different groupings of people: the sick and injured, the children, to those who wanted to dance or participate in games or various others who gathered in separate sections throughout the hall.
Annie Dillard’s essay “Sight into Insight” emphasizes how one must live in the moment and not sway towards others opinions in order to gain accurate observations on a situation. She uses nature as a prominent theme in her essay to represent the thought of looking past the superficial obvious in order to go deeper to where the hidden beauty rests. Dillard wants the reader to realize in order to observe clearly you have to live in the moment and let go of the knowledge you think you know on the situation. Dillard uses the example of her “walking with a camera vs walking without one” (para.31) and how her own observations differed with each. When she walked with the camera she “read the light” (para.31), and when she didn’t “light printed” (para.31).
From the beginning, Annie Dillard mentions how the eclipse was unique. She does this by stating how the sky “deepened to indigo.” When she mentions the color of the sky, she also emphasizes that it was “never seen.” Dillard's very detailed description of the eclipse makes it very clear that it was awesome. She makes it seem that she was out of this world.
In “Seeing,” Annie Dillard presents her observations and thoughts about the act of seeing and how it impacts our perception of the world around us. To connect with the essay, I try to relate my own experiences of seeing to the ones described by Dillard in her essay. One way I do this is to pay closer attention to the details in my surroundings and take the time to appreciate the beauty and complexity of the natural world. Dillard describes the act of seeing as a way to “worship” and appreciate the intricacies of the world, and I can try to adopt this mindset in my own life. Additionally, I can connect with Dillard’s essay by reflecting on the role of perception and how it shapes my understanding of reality.
In Annie Dillard’s story The Deer at Providencia, she talks about her experiences with suffering in life. The message that Dillard is trying to convey is that nobody can escape suffering, so we have to learn to accept it as a part of life. The first example of this message is when Dillard sees the deer at Providencia for the last time, and she glances at the deer pityingly and says the Spanish equivalent of “poor little thing.” However, after that Dillard says that she “knew at the time it was a ridiculous thing to say (Dillard 44).” This proves that she acknowledges the suffering it is experiencing, but knows that it is futile to point it out, as suffering is inescapable- it is a part of life.
Imagery is a way of writing that the author gives you visual descriptive writing or figurative language. One quote that stood out to me was “There would be other Sheila Mant’s in life, other fish, and though I came close once or twice, it was these secrets, hidden tuggings in the night that claimed me, and I never made that mistake again. ”(41) This quote has a lot of meaning in this story
The following three authors, Elie Wiesel, Santha Rau, and Kimberly Blaeser wrote memoirs or autobiographies. They did this to keep history from repeating itself, to show personal growth and its relation to one's identity, and to provide reasoning for one's educational values. To start with, In the book Night, Elie Wiesel makes imagery a priority in writing his memoir to stain the minds of readers with the unfortunate events that took place in the holocaust to prevent history from repeating itself. In the memoir, Elie Wiesel spends a portion of his life at a concentration camp. In the camp, inhumane actions were at an all time high.
In 1943, during World War II, there was a mass genocide of the Jewish population. Many people in the concentration camps had lost everything from clothes to family to names. These people who after losing everything, gave up, lost their lives. But those who continued putting one foot in front of the other, made it through to the end. Elie Wiesel, a young boy at the time, has lived to tell the world about his experiences in Auschwitz.
In this paragraph I will be talking about how the story and photograph have a similar technique. A technique that is similar and used throughout the story is figurative language. This is shown in the caption of the photograph when it says, “As the only window to the future”. This is an example of a figurative language because there aren’t windows that lead to your future.
A device Langston Hughes can use very efficiently. It’s one of the many things that put him above other poets. There are many examples of his efficiency in using imagery. “My old man died in a fine big house”(Cross, 9.) Langston is adding significant detail to the text to give us an idea of where his father died.
In ¨The Chase¨ from the memoir An American Childhood, Annie Dillard recalls a memorable incident from her childhood, which remained throughout her life, even till the present day. She narrates the adventurous incident where she had voluntarily instigated a strange man -thinking he wouldn’t react- into chasing after her on one particular day. It persisted with Dillard still to this existent, in spite of occurring eons ago, because the pursuit presented her the sheer thrill she later valued and a life-changing experience. Annie Dillard begins the narrative by presenting herself as a tomboy, as she states how she only prefers to hang out with boys for girls are no match for her hobbies. one of the many times he uses imagery throughout this story is when the narrator says, “on his way he would see the cottages and homes with their dark windows, and it was not unequal to walking through a graveyard where only the faintest glimmers of firefly light appeared in flickers behind the windows” (Pg 1). By using imagery to compare walking through the neighborhood as walking through a graveyard shows that it is completely silent and there is no activity in any of the houses. Most people wouldn't describe their neighborhood as a graveyard, this also develops the mood. Another time he uses imagery is when the narrator says, “The street was silent and long and empty, with only his shadow moving like the shadow of a hawk in mid-country” (1). This shows mood because the narrator describes him as a hawk in mid-country, that means that he is all alone in what he feels to be like a barren or abandoned place.
Character traits: The character trait that best describes Polonius in Hamlet is manipulative, this is shown the most prominently in the way he treats his children. One example is when Polonius ordered Ophelia to stop seeing Hamlet even when they know that they are both in love. He is always intervening in Ophelia’s life and life choices Turning points: The main turning points in Hamlet is when Hamlet stabs and kills Polonius, thinking it was Claudius.
