In the novel, Into The Wild , Chris McCandless was the outcast that did not mind being different and took life into his own hands. He took a journey to Alaska to create the life he wanted to live. He thought he was the only one with that mindset, fortunately many other humans with the same pioneer outlook did just the same thing. Jack Kerouac was a prime example. Both individuals found their success and fulfillment by being independent in creating their own journey.
Chris McCandless and Jack Kerouac had many similarities. They both set off to travel and find out what kind of life they want to pursue. For starters most attend school but neither of them thought school was a priority. Jack left to go to New York for school, but once he got there

John hurt himself playing college football, it was so bad it ended his career, so he dropped out of school and started to work odd jobs to make money. As for Chris who worked at McDonalds to make money to get him to Alaska. Since they were taking on their journeys alone, they both would write to keep themselves occupied. Chris would write in his journal every day about his thoughts and feelings, people he met along the way that helped him, and also send them postcards from the places he visited (Krakauer 1). Jack would write about his trips and where he is going next, which eventually he turned it into the well known novel, On The Road (JKB).

Of course they achieved what they set out to do, have a life of adventure under their own rules.
The last similarity is probably the saddest thing to have in common but both of their deaths were not intentional. Kerouac died from an abdominal hemorrhage (JKB) and McCandless died from eating wild potato seeds on accident (Krakauer 187).
With all similarities come differences, Jack and Chris have just enough to make it even.
