Samantha Menchaca Mrs. Dumond Literature May 17, 2024 Character Analysis Hidden Like Anne Frank is an exciting novel based on the fourteen true stories of survival during the Holocaust. Although this story involves fourteen different characters, one character that stands out the most is Jaap Sitters. Jaap Sitter's story takes place during World War Two (WWII), at the time when Jews were forced out of their homes and taken away. Through an exploration of Jaap’s difficult journey, his characteristics of emotion, strength, and bravery emerge as essential elements throughout his life. In the novel, Hidden Like Anne Frank, Jaap Sitter is first seen as an emotional young boy. However, just as Jaap was about to question what Jopie meant, Jopie smacked Jaap vigorously out of nowhere. Amazed at what had occurred, Jaap stood up and walked away. Once Jaap reached his home he instantly burst into tears, and that is when his mother explained to Jaap that Jopies parents were NSB members, and they disliked Jews. Therefore, after the incident, Jaap never again played with Jopie Hoefnagel. Although Jaap was emotional after the event with Jopie, his strength emerges as he is left with the only chance of survival. As described in the story, Jaaps family was forced out of their home and given a new address to live in. After the family had been living there, German soldiers would take people occupying homes and send them away in cars, never to be seen again. Once a building became unoccupied, German soldiers would hammer large nails into the door frames and place a seal on the lock so they would know that there were no inhabitants occupying the building. Thus, knowing this information, Jaap's father became aware that the Germans were coming during the night, but this time they were planning on taking every living
