With his lack of understanding and love for soft objects, Lennie goes with his best friend George to work on the ranch in the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Lennie loves to touch soft things and he sometimes gets into trouble for it. He likes to talk about the rabbits and how he is going to get to tend them. Lennie does not remember very well and tends to forget things that happen. Lennie is just like a baby and has to be taken care of at all times or he may get into trouble. Lennie shows how he is babylike by always wanting to touch soft objects, not remembering what people do or tell him, and always needing to be taken care of by George. Lennie’s babyish personality is shown by how he always wants to pet soft objects. In the beginning of the story Lennie keeps a mouse in his pocket and pets it as George and he walk to the ranch. George asked Lennie“’What you want of a deadmouse, anyways?’ ‘I could pet it with my thumb while we walked along,’ said Lennie.” When George and Lennie get to the ranch they hear that Slim, the jerk line skinner of the ranch, has a dog that just had pups. Slim gives one of the pups to Lennie and Lennie pets the pup and even tries to bring it into the bunkhouse after George told him not to.
