Throughout the story Ralph wants everyone to stay civilized, But alternatively Jack becomes obsessed with becoming the leader and starts to lose his way of society. Ralph tries to keep everyone in their right mind, but by the end of the story he realizes that people react differently and it is difficult to maintain society. Ralph tries to maintain the fire and keep it going additionally, he knows if he gives up the fire that he will start to think and act like Jack’s tribe. Golding lets us know that Ralph still tries to maintain society by saying, “He put the conch to his lips and began to blow. Ralph tries to maintain that good human nature and keeps everyone that will listen to him in a good state of mind. Ralph tells his group to gather things up to build a big tent out of things they gathered so everyone does not have to sleep on the ground and will not be affected by the outside animals. Golding lets us know Ralph still has that good human nature in him by saying, “ You voted for me for chief, didn’t you hear the conch? You played a dirty trick-we’d given you the fire if you’d asked for it”(Golding 161). Jack doesn’t care about anyone other than himself and will do anything to be recognized as someone that will have everything done for him. At the party Jack makes everyone treat him like a king and bring him food, drinks, and anything else he wants. Jack beats down and brutally beat Wilfred for his own desire and doesn’t think about Wilfred’s well being. Ralph learns that everyone can handle the pressure and will eventually acquire the bad human nature, meanwhile Jack embraces it and becomes a selfish and ruthless
