The Necklace Character Essay The Necklace, by Guy de Maupassant, is a fictional account of a married couple in 18th century France. Madame Matilde Loisel and her husband, Monsieur Loisel, live a very common ordinary life. While Monsieur Loisel is satisfied with this life, Matilde longs for something more. As the story progresses, we see Matilde is an undisciplined character because she is selfish, stubborn, and childish. First, Madame Matilde Loisel is selfish because, in lines 62-67, she wanted to buy a fancy dress that costs 400 francs, even though her husband was going to use that money to buy a gun so he could go shooting with his friends next summer. After she got a dress, she then demanded she wanted some jewelry to go with the dress.
