The Hero of The Odyssey I believe that Odysseus was an amazing leader. Homer has shown this in so many ways throughout his book The Odyssey. Everyone relies on Odysseus and he never lets them down unless he has to. Throughout every adventure he keeps as many of them safe as he can and everyone he meets knows of him as the leader of his army. He is smart and listens to his brain, not his heart. He knows emotions won't save their lives. He was the reason they won the Trojan war and he is also who tried to save everyone from going home as failures and would have if they didn't release the wind on the boat. Odysseus was the smartest of all his men and it showed.

Odysseus always knew what to do in any situation. Of course Athena helped but Odysseus put the plans in action. An example of this is when he and his men were stuck in the cyclops’ cave. At first he used his smarts to make sure the cyclops wouldn't know him. In book V page 26 the cyclops said “Come on then, little Greek, I asked you your name. Out with it, no need to be shy.” Then Odysseus replied with, “Mighty cyclops my name is Noman. Now I beg you to grant me the favor you promised me.” The cyclops laughed at him then ate 2 of his men. After that the cyclops left to watch his sheep and he put a big stone in the doorway so only he could move it. Odysseus knew about this and he knew that if they just killed the cyclops they were stuck in there forever. He came up with a genius plan. First they offered the cyclops wine to get him drunk and make him fall asleep so they could make their move. While he had finally escaped the cyclops cave and was sailing away he teased the cyclops which is what started the whole issue with Poseidon not letting them get home. When they were a decent distance from the cyclops island Odysseus started shouting mean things at the cyclops and ended up telling it his real name. The cyclops immediately recognized him and said he knew that he was coming. Then the cyclops prayed to his father, Poseidon, and made him make sure Odysseus and his men never made it home. He said even if they did to make the journey miserable and long. Poseidon kept this promise as we know and kept Odysseus from home as long as possible. While yes all of this is horrible and was a mistake. We have to remember that Odysseus is human.
