The novel Lord of the Flies written by William Golding is about a group of boys who become stranded on a deserted island due to a plane crash. The boys go through many circumstances that cause them to change either for better or worse. This brings out something that is inside all man through different experiences, and ultimately survival of the fittest. In the Lord of the Flies, Golding attempts to show violence versus peace by portraying the desire for violence overwhelming peace. In the beginning, peace is portrayed through numerous different circumstances that the boys encounter, but peace is also found in the final moments. For instance the conch was symbolic and, “The conch and the rules, closely aligned, are associated from the beginning with Ralph’s leadership” (Van Vuuren). The conch is what helps manage the situation the boys were in and guide Ralph’s leadership of taking control. Also, the conch assisted with fairness among the boys depicted through the statement, “Conch! That’s what this thing is called. I’ll give the conch to the next speaking” (Golding 33). The conch was used to establish a mock government for the boys to be rescued; thus, it was used as an authority and a way to settle rules in a calm order way. Peace wins over violence but at a cost through the destruction of the island and the murders of some. Peace is what kept order and promise at the beginning, but violence overtook peace as the dark nature of man revealed itself. A plan is what was trying to be made for them to be rescued in a peaceful matter; however, it took violence for them to be rescued through the burning of the island. The violence in this story was so extreme that it shows how evil and violence is inside all man but comes out depending on the circumstance at
