So even after all that, the jury still held prejudice against Tom just because he was black, and the victim was white. This shows that prejudice can cause people to be falsely accused and convicted of things they in fact did not do. Just as prejudice was shown against Dolphus Raymond. Dolphus Raymond had prejudice set against him because he was married to a black woman. To combat this prejudice set against him, Dolphus acts intoxicated. This is shown when Dolphus says “If I weave a little and drink out of this sack, folks can say Dolphus Raymond’s in the clutches of whiskey, that’s why he won’t change his ways” (Lee 229). Dolphus knows that there is a prejudice set against him because of his action to counter this, he acts intoxicated so people will have something to blame him for marrying a woman of color. They can say it is the alcohol that made him do it, he cannot help himself instead of them harassing him for marrying a black woman.
