In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird Harper Lee wants to show courage in her characters in the story. Atticus (the father) wants to show his son Jem what courage is. He states in page 149 line 8-10 “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand”. There are multiple ways courage is expressed in this novel. Atticus tries to show his children to not be “common” as he explained it to Scout. I believe the reason Atticus is helping the African American man is because he wants to show that everybody is different but should be treated equal.
