Have you ever wondered if characters' relationships were destined to fail in stories or even in real life? Well, this idea of star-crossed lovers where 2 people fall head over heels for each other but eventually end is a common archetype used in many stories. One of the most famous playwrights to use this is William Shakespeare in Romeo and Juliet and a less famous usage is Ovid’s Pyramus and Thisbe are similar, yet different. Both of these stories face challenges but some are more affected by destiny, while others are personal choices. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet depicts characters more affected by destiny. It just so happens that Romeo’s last name is Montague and Juliet ‘s is Capulet, which means they were never meant to be together from the start. This problem between the characters separates them from seeing each other due to their families' “ancient grudge.” Their fighting has been such a problem that it has gotten physical and even “disturbed the quiet of our streets.” The prospect of a Montague and a Capulet being wed would cause Lord Montague and Lord Capulet to unleash a rage so violent that it would lead to their families’ demise. But in Pyramus and Thisbe, the parents of their families don’t hate each other at all they just don’t like the concept of marriage.
