When comparing slaves it seem that there are similarities and differences. It appears that all the potters have the same creativity process, but there are differences. If you take into consideration the time period they were created, there are many years separating them from each other. The black slaves were making face jugs in the 1800s. They were made on pottery wheels and fired in wood fire Kilns. The reasons why the black slaves made their face jugs were different from other potters. They made the face jugs for family and friends. They were used primarily for marking graves, because the Black Slaves were not considered human and were not allowed to have head stones. They were also used to scare away the devil. They used them to give the slaves a sense of individuality in the painful world they lived in. Finally, they used them for grave markers and to scare away the devil. This economic depression started in the early 1930’s and continued until the late 1930’s or middle 1940’s. One of the differences between Black American potters and the 1900 white potters was related to the poor economic conditions during the depression. They began making face jugs to supplement their income and prevent them from going out of business. They thought that making face jugs for tourists would provide them with income and prevent them from going out of business in these poor economic times. The second reason the 1900 white potters began to make was face jugs was to hold moonshine and to scare little kids away.
