The French Revolution was a period of political and social upheaval in the history of France. It last from 1789 to 1799. During this time, the French governmental structure, previously an absolute monarchy with feudal privileges for the aristocracy and catholic clergy, underwent radical change to forms based on Enlightenment principles of citizenship and indelible rights. In the Enlightenment people had new ideas about government which gave the French the perfect way to have their country work well. The French believed in the ideas of philosophers like Locke, Montesquieu and Voltaire, so they tried to overthrow their government.
