Denise Duhamel’s “How It Will End” is a comical narrative poem about one couples’ experience upon seeing a lifeguard and his girlfriend in a dispute. Initially the couple both see the lifeguard and his girlfriends’ arguing as humorous. That all changes when the couple begins to argue about why the lifeguard and his girlfriend are fighting. Essentially the couple is arguing about arguing. The last line of the poem states “We look around, but no one is watching us.” It is essentially the punchline to the poem. It perfectly encapsulates the irony of the couples’ final state.
