How Jake Barnes’ Feelings get Changed Wherever he goes In Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises, the reader visits many different places in Spain and France. With each setting change, the mood of the characters often changes. Hemingway uses the settings in The Sun Also Rises to portray the feelings of characters in the book, specifically Jake because his mood changes when he is in various places such as Paris, Pamplona, and Burguete. Jake is part of the lost generation and is living an aimless life. He chases a woman he is in love with, but knows he can not have, goes around town getting drunk nearly every night, and does not ever stop to live his life while he is in his home city of Paris, …show more content…

The day leading up to the fiesta was full of laughter and happy memories for Jake and his friends, Jake describes their dinner like that too, “As a matter of fact, supper was a pleasant meal. Brett wore a black, sleeveless evening dress. She looked quite beautiful. Mike acted as though nothing had happened. I had to go up and bring Robert Cohn down. He was reserved and formal, and his face was still taut and sallow, but he cheered up finally. He could not stop looking at Brett. It seemed to make him happy. It must have been pleasant for him to see her looking so lovely, and know he had been away with her and that everyone knew it. They could not take that away from him. Bill was very funny. So was Michael. They were good together” (Hemingway 75). The group is going to dinner together and everyone is in a good mood, Jake later says he forgets about his feeling of disgust and is happy sitting at dinner with his friends, this is what Jake came to Pamplona for. This novel rotates around Jacob, or Jake, Barnes’, the narrator’s, life; which mostly includes drinking with his friends, Robert Cohn, a Jewish man who is often verbally abused by his “friends”, Ashley Brett, an attractive woman who Jake is in love with, Bill Gorton, a good friend of Jake’s, and a couple others. Their life in dull Paris seems to revolve around spending money and drinking, but when they go to colorful Pamplona, Spain, they have an amazing time during the fun-filled fiesta. Ernest Hemingway uses the “iceberg theory” when he presents Jake Barnes to the reader; he does not directly tell you a lot about Jake, but through Jake’s thoughts and emotions, one can tell that he was injured in the war, he is not a very religious person, he would rather do what he loves, instead of what he must, and he does not like to be honest with himself, despite the fact that he is one of the more honest characters in the novel. Ernest Hemingway does not directly let the reader know that Jake is injured in a special place; he allows the reader to interpret that from Jake’s thoughts and memories.
