How Jake Barnes’ Feelings get Changed Wherever he goes In Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises, the reader visits many different places in Spain and France. With each setting change, the mood of the characters often changes. Hemingway uses the settings in The Sun Also Rises to portray the feelings of characters in the book, specifically Jake because his mood changes when he is in various places such as Paris, Pamplona, and Burguete. Jake is part of the lost generation and is living an aimless life. The day leading up to the fiesta was full of laughter and happy memories for Jake and his friends, Jake describes their dinner like that too, “As a matter of fact, supper was a pleasant meal. Brett wore a black, sleeveless evening dress. She looked quite beautiful. Mike acted as though nothing had happened. I had to go up and bring Robert Cohn down. He was reserved and formal, and his face was still taut and sallow, but he cheered up finally. He could not stop looking at Brett. It seemed to make him happy. It must have been pleasant for him to see her looking so lovely, and know he had been away with her and that everyone knew it. They could not take that away from him. Bill was very funny.
