Genesis Essay
In the book of Genesis, the theme of God’s abundant grace and preeminence throughout trials is explored in the stories of his people.
Joseph’s life specifically is an example of God’s provision and mercy in times of affliction and adversity. Beginning in the first chapter with Adam and Eve and humanity’s subsequent fall, through the last chapter, documenting the reunification of Jacob and Joseph, God’s unconditional love is evident.
Joseph, one of the most well known biblical figures, went through a drastic period of orientation, disorientation and new orientation.

While in jail, Joseph deciphered the dreams of a cupbearer and baker. The cupbearer received a favorable interpretation and Joseph asked him to “remember him” (40:14).
Many years later, Pharaoh had a dream that none of his wise men or magicians could decipher. The cupbearer finally “remembered” Joseph to Pharaoh and sent for him. Desperate for answers, Pharaoh requested that Joseph explain the meaning of his dreams. So, Joseph with God’s help interpreted his dreams: the people would experience seven years of famine and seven years of plenty. Joseph instructed Pharaoh to appoint someone to collect and store grain in preparation of the famine. Because of Joseph’s wisdom and humility, Pharaoh appointed him second in command, in charge of the whole land of Egypt.
