How many times have you tried to start anew but you fail? Tess, a young woman who does not have any control over her life dealing with death and her painstaking efforts to become a proper woman. Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy is a simple novel published in England in 1891 criticizing women oppression.
The three main characters in the novel are: Tess Durbeyfield, Alec d’Urberville, and Angel Clare. Tess a young and attractive woman, doubtlessly, is the central character of the novel, intelligent, and with a deep moral sensibility is also considered a heroine because she represents a larger experience than of a single person. Alec, an insouciant, inmoral, destroyer of Tess’s life, is a very interesting character due to his duplicity of personality which is evident at the end of the story. …show more content…

The novel that is written in simpe way, tells the story of Tess, whose father finds out that his family has a relation with a wealthy family, the d’Urbervilles. Tess is sent by her mother to find a job in the house of the family, where she is raped by the son of the famiy, Alec. Years later, Tess tried to begin her life again and she meets Angel, they get married. When Tess tells Angel about her past he leaves her and travels to Brazil; returns some years later to lose his wife for a second time.
The novel show us Tess as the victim of a society where men are more important than women, Tess’s life is full of tragedies. Thomas Hardy made a powerful critique to his society which had an unfair system that supports high class which also are considered powerful and without any problem a rich man can abandon a poor girl.
