During the conflict, Odysseus is shown to be crafty as he comes up with a plan to make the Cyclops think his name is “nobody” which tricked the other Cyclopes. “Nohbdy. Nohbdy’s tricked me. Nohbdy’s ruined me! To this rough shout they made a sage reply: Ah well, if nobody has played foul there in your lonely bed, we are no use in pain given by great Zeus” (403-407). This is why Odysseus is shown to be crafty as the Cyclopes think there is no one there that has harmed the Polyphemus. Since the Cyclopes think there is no one there, they go back where they came from, leaving the Cyclops with no other help because of Odysseus’s devious plan. Odysseus is also proven to be wise as he knew beforehand that if they killed the Cyclops, they can’t escape so instead, they gave him liquor. ‘“If I killed him we perished there as well, for we would never move his ponderous doorway slab aside...” (293-295). “Cyclops try some wine. Odysseus is intelligent when he warns the crew to not eat the Cattle of the Sun god, but despite the crew eating the cattle, Odysseus didn’t. “Old shipmates, our stores are in the ship's hold, food, and drink: the cattle here are not for our provision, or we pay dearly for it” (854-856). This proves how intelligent Odysseus was to not eat the cattle, despite being hungry. If Odysseus ate the cattle, he would have probably been punished just like his impolitic crew. Odysseus is also shown to be strong when he swims through a storm that Zeus created to punish the crew. “When Odysseus and his men set sail again, the crew is punished with death, a thunderbolt from Zeus destroys their ship, and all the men except Odysseus. Exhausted and nearly drowned, he makes his way to Calypso’s island” (931-935). This shows how strong Odysseus was to swim through a storm. Therefore this is how Odysseus overcomes the third external conflict by being intelligent and
