How Physical Therapy Has Changed My Life

Being eager to help coworkers can be dangerous to your health, this is experience talking. Just reporting to my duty station, being the newest employee I was determined to make new friends and a good impression. So eager in fact, that I leapt to volunteer and assist in the moving of a large piece of furniture down a flight of stairs. During the task the desk slipped and fell, taking myself with it. The desk tumbled down on top of me injuring multiple discs in my lower spine, as a result causing severe nerve damage in my lower extremities. Consequently this event has changed my life dramatically with the need of multiple operations, daily medications, and including an unexpected change in my career path.
The two major discs damaged in the incident was the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebra. Being that the two disc were severely herniated, the vertebra could no longer properly support the weight of my body and coupled with nerve damage, caused me to drag my left leg. Corrective procedures and operations were required to return mobility. The numerous surgeries and spinal epidurals were arduous, physically and mentally. Each painful procedure required bed rest for a prolong period of time, with many follow up appointments. This routine has become second nature over the many years, without the prescriptions the discomfort would make the normal mobility too challenging. An unfortunate side effect of some of the medications is weight gain, depression, nausea, and the most challenging, being prohibited from driving while under the influence. These medications also impact my life negatively, as I have to plan accordingly when taking them. With this in mind, focusing on complicated tasks, such as essays and driving have to be completed before consumption of certain
