Introduction and Summary Upon picking up the book “How Soccer Explains the World”, I thought that the book was just going to be about soccer. The cover of the book gave me a feeling that there were going to be statistics in the book, familiar names, and how Soccer actually explains the world. However, my assumptions of the book deemed to be completely wrong. The subtitle is a bit misleading, though: author Franklin Foer doesn't really use soccer to develop a theory; instead, he focuses on how examining soccer in different countries allows us to understand how international forces affect politics and life around the globe. Who knew the title of the book wasn’t actually meant to be taken literally. To go on, Foer discusses many topics in the book from Serbian thugs to cultural wars in America in the late 1980’s. This sport, which everywhere but in the United States is the most popular team sport of the poor, provides an alternative focal point to both globalized economies and traditional religions and cultures. Capitalists and theocrats are unable to compete against a sport that manages to change its image in protean ways to suit local conditions. Untimely, Foer’s central thesis is about the different cultures of countries being change by the way soccer is played or viewed in that respective country. To go on, the aim of the book is to guide readers on a journey through each country and see how they live and how soccer affects the people and the atmosphere. The scope of the book is through the eyes of Foer as he goes to countries like Serbia and gets Intel from the actual fans of Red Star Belgrade and stories of what they do to other fans.
