The increased popularity of social media has caused an unexpected rise in false news. Social media allows for anything to be written and posted by anyone, without any consequences. What if there was a world with no fake news and just the truth? Fake news has changed people’s daily lives for a very long time and its affect on people is at an all time high right now. Although false news is not new, it had a noticeably big impact on current day elections and political decisions, especially in the US Presidential Election and on its candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Swaying people and their opinions, false news completely changed the momentum in the election and many argue it brought Donald Trump to the White House.

It was giving her a lot of hate for things she did not do. Pizzagate was one of the main things that Hillary Clinton got hate for. Also, the owner of the pizza place received death threats with “one reading ‘I will kill you personally’” (Kang). Many people gave Hillary Clinton and people around her a hard time because of one fake news article that spread via social media. The owner of the pizza place “found dozens of made-up articles about Mrs. Clinton kidnapping, molesting and trafficking children in the restaurant's back rooms” (Kang). The domino effect was common in the election. From one article that spread, many more articles appeared about the same topic, and these spread to people who believed them creating trouble for Hillary Clinton. Subsequently, these articles brought hate to Hillary Clinton, leading people to support Donald Trump. However, not only normal people targeted Clinton. A couple countries in favor of Donald Trump also targeted Clinton, “Russia's goals were to undermine public faith in the U.S. democratic process, denigrate Secretary Clinton, and harm her electability and potential presidency” (Blow). Russia had a big blow on Hillary Clinton in the election and again made a lot of Clinton’s supporters switch to Trump’s side. In Trump’s case, fake news actually helped him win the election, “After all, he was universally written off by just about every mainstream pundit, and he faced disadvantages in money, organization and access to traditional political expertise. Yet by putting out a message that resonated with people online, Mr. Trump hacked through every established political order” (Manjoo). Trump was very good at putting out fake things to promote himself and downgrade others. However, Russia also helped Trump by hacking the DNC. Intelligence Officials stated “Russia's goals were to undermine public faith in the U.S. democratic process, denigrate Secretary Clinton, and harm her electability and potential presidency” (Blow). Russia clearly wanted Trump to win so they helped him out by spreading fake news. In addition, Trump will also be affected by fake news as president of the United States. Obama had these things to say for Trump, “Mr. Obama also warned Mr. Trump of the need to take the job of the presidency seriously and to be tough on Russia” (Obama Assails Fake News and Warns Trump to Take Job Seriously). Finally, Trump will have to be harsh with Russia in his 4 years of presidency and will have to find a way to stop fake news.
