How Starr is Shaped by Conflict in the Novel The Hate You Give Fatal police shootings of unarmed black people are 3 times higher than white people in the United States of America. This stat ties back to the book The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, where a young girl named Starr is impacted significantly by the death of her good friend. This tragic event has taught Starr to use her voice as her weapon and stand up as an advocate for Khalil. The title of this book stands for “THUG”. Which links to “the hate you give little infants f’s everyone” as Maverick, Starr’s father says in the book. At the start of the story she is timid and isn’t sure about sharing his story due to the threats she will receive. Starr is now receiving threats that range from online comments all the way to gun shots at her house for sharing Khalil's story. As hard as it is for her to get up and share what she witnessed, she does. She finds ways to go about it, she talks to different activists, goes on TV anonymously. She even eventually testifies to court about Khalil's case. During her TV interview, many questions were asked but one stood out. “What would you say to the officer if he were here?” Starr says “I’d ask him if he wish he shot me too.” This conflict has changed Starr as a person. She is not scared to use her words and express herself, instead shes more focused on standing up for not only Khalil but the whole black community. Starr makes sure everyone knows about Khalil's story and makes everyone aware he was unarmed. She participates in a dangerous protest so that his story is heard. At the end of the story she stands in cop cars and chants for Khalil: “Khalil lived”. Her character development changes so much throughout the story, because she was unsure of initially sharing his story and getting involved with
