The article that I chose from Conformity and Conflict was, Chapter 32: How Sushi Went Global. Theodore Bestor illustrates the globalization of the Japanese culinary custom, sushi. I personally am a huge sushi fan, although I’m not adventurous when it comes to trying the different kinds; chicken and shrimp tempura sushi will always be my go to. This article was interesting to see how Bluefin’s spread all over from Japan to the rest of the globe. Americans observed the globalization as a West-to-East movement. Bluefin tuna is an Atlantic species of tuna in the family Scombridae. They are a highly migratory species that ranges from the equator to Newfoundland, from Turkey to the Gulf of Mexico. For assignment one, we read the articles about culture in chapter one and three. We were given the knowledge that culture is a learned and shared knowledge that a group of people use to generate behavior and interpret experiences. In relevance to chapter 32, how sushi went global; I read about the popularity growth of sushi. After World War II, world trade and global economic and cultural interdependence exploded. Countries can communicate with other parts of the world for a benefit of culture exchange, which includes sushi. Globalization doesn't necessarily homogenize cultural differences nor erase the salience of cultural labels. It instead grows the franchise. In the global economy of consumption, the brand equity of sushi as a Japanese cultural property adds to the cachet of both the country and the cuisine. The prestige factor that Japanese has over other culture can add business to a company; people associate the cosmopolitan lifestyle that sushi brings as luxurious and exotic. At first, the introduction of sushi was alarming to the people in America due to the fact that it was raw food. Although the food was attractive and served on ice, the brave ones were willing to try the delicacy; and soon sushi became a favorite to everyone’s diet.
