Adding descriptive words to each sentence can make the writing less of a bore to read. In the book Echo by Pam Muñoz Ryan, one way figurative language makes a sentence more interesting is, “…filled the room with a rising march” (Ryan p.g. 356) The author could have just said, the music filled the room but by adding descriptive words it can make reading that sentence more interesting than just the base sentence.
Thomas C. Foster states in his book How to Read Literature Like a Professor, that there are three main items to understanding literature. The first item is memory; Memory helps a reader connect works of literature with other experiences as a way of possibly better understating the writing at hand. Symbolism is the second item noted by Foster. Symbolism can be used to open a readers mind to the big picture being painted. Not all works of literature are as complicated, as to where symbolism is splattered through the pages.
We had conversations on what they thought the book was about and what were their predications for what was going to happen in the book. Some of our students wanted to see what happen and was excited about the book before we started to read. Having these conversations and engagement before we read, helps the students to make predictions on what they think will happen. It also helps there thinking time to come up with different prediction for the story. Using the visuals to help the student learn the new vocabulary helped.
In Mike Bunn’s reading “How to Read Like a Writer” he discuss the importance of being able to read as a writer. He explains why it’s necessary to be able to understand what the author is trying to get across. Being able to identify why a writer chose is a certain tone for his/her writing is what makes one a better reader. One should put to themselves in the author’s shoes and be able to connect with the writing and understand from what point the author is coming from. When reading like a writer it facilitates one’s ability to understand to do this.
When writing a novel authors must think not only about what they are about to write, but why they are going to write it. They have to select diction that will convey their inner thoughts and emotions. There is a need of imagery to pull the reader into the story so they will not lose their drive to read. Tone must constantly shift in order to keep the reader so engaged that they are determined to read until it all makes sense. From the longest to the shortest sentence, there is a reason -- called syntax-- why that sentence is there.
It gives characters personalities and accents and brings them to life. It is the best part of a story because it pulls the readers in. There is always literary work for someone to be interested in. the authors use different techniques in order to attract the readers, such as rhythm, rhyme, characters, settings, characters, theme, and conflict and other techniques. One of the elements that literature allow the readers to use is the imagination in order to visualize what the author message is in his story or poem. Some stories, poems or drama are based from the writer’s personal experience, such as the conflict with they have with society because of their race, gender or ethnicity.
