Muslims made many innovations and adaptations to tools that we still use today. One is the compass, which people use to find their direction. Another is the astrolabe, which is used to find astronomical measures. The astrolabe helped Muslims calculate the diameter of the earth. Also to find their way when they go places. The most important one was learning and education. The compass, astrolabe, and education all shaped our world today. The compass was a round tool which Muslims astronomers and professors adapted to and innovated to a tool that we still use today. The Muslims made changes to it to insure that traders and travels made it to their destinations safely. The Muslims also created the Qibla compass which pointed toward Mecca in the mosque. The first ever Muslim compass was a metal needle in a bowl of water. Ibn Sunna describes a dry compass called the Qibla in one of his books. This compass was in mosques and pointed toward Mecca. It was used to predict the location of the sun, moon, planets, and stars. The astrolabe was also used to find the direction of Mecca just like the compass and also the times of Salat. The astrolabe could determine the latitude on land. Muhammad Al- Fazari is credited for creating the first astrolabe in the 8th century. Another astronomer Al-Sulfi found one thousand plus uses for the astrolabe. Some of the areas he found new uses for were astronomy, navigation, and surveying. The astrolabe was also used to find out how far earth was in the sun. The first time they did it it was off but then they innovated it and it came out more accurate. They were only eight miles off.
