The Ice Bowl The game that changed history. A championship game! A game that determined, what team would go to the first Super Bowl ever. The 1967 championship game otherwise known as “The Ice Bowl” is the coldest game in NFL history! Luckily, for the Green Bay Packers, they won, and secured a spot in the second Super Bowl, but not so lucky for the Dallas Cowboys. In the 1967 season the teams with the highest statistics leading up to the championship games, were the Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Colts, Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys, and the Cleveland Browns. They won the championship and were hopeful to win the Superbowl. The morning of the big day, the temperature was -27 degrees Celsius without wind chill! The temperature at kickoff was -25 degrees Celsius. Eight minutes into the game, Dowler threw an eight yard pass and the Packers got their first touchdown. In the second quarter the Packers got one more touchdown from Dowler, he threw a 46 yard pass! Ten minutes into the second half Andrie recovered a fumble from Starr and ran 7 yards to get their first touchdown of the game. Just minutes after the Cowboys first touchdown they got a field goal making the score 10-14. “It was so cold that they even called off an elaborate halftime show” (Associated Press). At half time the temperature was -38 degrees Celsius with wind chill. “The field was a sheet of ice” (“Pro Football Hall of Fame.”). Nothing happened in the third half, other than a couple fumbles. The start of the fourth quarter, it was still freezing! Seconds into the fourth quarter the cowboys got a touchdown and took the lead. “Exactly two minutes into the quarter Dallas led Green Bay 17-14” (NFL.). Thirteen seconds left in the game, the Green Bay Packers got a one yard sneak touchdown, making the score 17-21. The cowboys had no chance of coming back from that touchdown.
