Among the pioneers of law enforcement include August Vollmer and Orlando Wilson. Vollmer was instrumental in the development of criminal investigation techniques. He advocated for police reforms through higher personnel standards and technology. In 1921, he introduced the lie detector machine to be used in criminal investigation.
Other case management records that Vollmer introduced include fingerprinting technology to identify suspects, and crime labs to ensure information on offenses and incidents as well as case management records in criminal investigations. The lie detector came about as a way of opposing the third degree of torturing offenders to extract information. However, it was his student, John Larson who built the lie detector.

The lie detector technique measures and records an individual’s physiological indices, such as skin conductivity, respiration, pulse, and blood pressure when they are asked and answer a series of questions. This technique is used to determine whether one is lying or telling the truth. Lie detectors scare suspects into thinking that they will get caught thus end up telling the truth.
Fingerprinting technique, on the other hand, involves dusting and collecting fingerprints from a crime scene to ascertain who was present thus eliminate a large pool of suspects. The law enforcement officers compare the fingerprints to a database of offenders to get their suspect. Fingerprints are useful because they are unique to every individual.
The Reid method of interviewing and interrogation involves evaluating suspects according to the specific observations relating to a crime.
