How did the life and spirit of the average American change from the 1920s to the 1930s? The life and spirit of the average American changed dramatically from the 1920s to the 1930s. In the 1920s it was very upbeat. Americans were living their life, mainly the women though. They went to bars and there they drank, smoked, and danced. In that time Jazz music was getting popular so that is what they danced to. In the 1930s everything went downhill for everyone. The country went through a crisis called the Great Depression. In the 1920s you saw happy and a great time whereas in the 1930s it was full of terror and heartbreak. The Great Depression was a huge part of the 1930s. Stock prices crashed, unemployment crashed, everything basically crashed and went down a hill going 100 miles per hour and did not stop. These are some statistics from when everything fell. People lost their farms between 1930 and 1934, 9 million savings accounts were wiped out between 1930 and 1933, and it was 8 cents for an 8 ounce box of cornflakes in 1934. The Great Depression impacted American workers and the economy by a lot. There was no work because they did not have the money to pay the workers. The banks had a huge crash to. People were rushing to the bank to money out of it but there was no money to get out. Banks started to fail and didn't even have a penny to give out. They also had cuts in production, meaning they did not have factories running anymore. President Roosevelt was President later in the 1930s. People were so desperate for help that they wrote him and his wife letters because they did not have anyone else to ask for things. “For the first time in my life I am asking for a favor...” this is said by Mrs. J.T.
