In the novel “And Then There Were None '' the theme Agatha Christie develops is trust. This is shown throughout the novel when the characters all get the letters, and when they know the murder is among them. Within the whole novel Agatha Christie shows how trust can be broken.
The first way Agatha Christie develops the theme of trust is when all the characters get the letter. In the beginning of the book all the main characters get a letter asking them to come to Indian island. The letter was from a different person for everyone. But the thing they all had in common was they barely knew the person who supposedly sent the letter. An example of this is on page 3 when Vera Claythorne’s letter said “I have received your name from the skilled Women’s Agency together with their recommendation.” So Vera did not know this person personally. They just said she was recommended to them. But yet Vera trusted them and went to the island to be a secretary anyway. Another example of this is on page 6 when Miss Brent’s letter said “I do hope

When the characters on the island came to the conclusion that the murderer was one of them they were scared. They did not trust anyone. An example of this was when there were only five people left. They made a rule that only one person could leave the room at a time. So if one person needed to leave the room the other four had to stay in the prior room together. Until the other person got back. This shows they did not trust anyone on the island. They could not even be in a room along with another person. The second example of this is on page 149 when Vera got scared and screamed. They offered her a glass of brandy. Vere said “I won’t drink it.” She did not trust that it was not poisoned. She would not drink it unless she saw a fresh bottle opened.
