The Madness that is Hamlet (will change)

Hamlet, like many of Shakespeare’s plays, is very well known and is read in high schools around the world. A definite tragedy, the play centers around a boy named Hamlet, who's father (the King of Denmark) has just died. He is in the process of grieving and is deemed unstable to take the throne. Instead, his uncle Claudius takes it and in turn marries Hamlet’s mother, Queen Gertrude. In a woods one night, Hamlet is visited by the ghost of his father. His father tells him that he was murdered by his brother, Claudius, and that Hamlet must avenge his death. Betrayal happens many times throughout the play. To begin with, Hamlet feels betrayed by his mother, Queen Gertrude. He believes that she did not grieve her husband and jumped into the “bed of incest” with his uncle, who is now the king () . He feels disgusted by her and even goes so far as to call her weak (). Then, when Hamlet is visited by the ghost of his father, it is discovered that he was murdered by his own brother (). He comes up with a plan to act mad, so his plans of revenge will be easier to carry out. However, his mother and uncle believe he is truly insane, so they send for his friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to spy on him. When Hamlet discovers their motives, he feels betrayed because they lied to him (). Obviously, betrayal happens in society today and has since the beginning of time. Whether it is a friend turning their back on another friend, or a family member betraying another family member, betrayal is something that everyone has at least experienced once. It is easy to emotionally connect with how Hamlet deals with the news of Claudius’s deception. He is angry and upset, as many would be if they heard such news. It’s refreshing to readers to know that Hamlet is feeling the same emotions they
