What does it take to become a veterinary assistant? Becoming a veterinary assistant is one of the many things that I have included in my bucket list. There are several qualities one must have to become a veterinary assistant which include knowing how to handle and get along with animals, earning a high school diploma, and knowing the basics on medical terminology.
First, a veterinary assistant must know how to handle and get along with animals. “A veterinarian must get along with animals and should have an interest in science.” (Lanoue and Massengill) This explains that in order to enter this field you must get along with animals. “The ability to enjoy, appreciate, and understand animal behavior is important. “Veterinary communication is based on the use of medical and scientific terminology. Proper use of medical terminology comes under the SCANS competency for “Information” and “Foundation Skills.” (Pattengale) This shows us that in order to become a veterinary assistant you must know how to apply medical terminology to your job. Also, “Your care duties include providing animals with food and water; taking x-rays, holding animals still during treatment; administering medication as directed…and monitoring the response of animals to treatment.” (Unknown, 1) This quote tells the reader that there are several medical things involved with becoming a veterinary assistant. “The remaining four years include classroom work… lab courses in anatomy and biochemistry; and other scientific and medical studies.” (Lanoue and Massengill) This explains the many things a veterinary assistant must know. By explaining the things a veterinary assistant must know the authors are also explaining the characteristics involved with being a veterinary assistant.
