Tonya Harding was an elite american figure skater. She was very well respected as an athlete until the scandal that would go down in history. The scandal that would bring more light to figure skating than ever before. When Tonya Harding was accused of hiring a hitman to attack Nancy Kerrigan, her biggest rival. On October 6th, 1994 as Nancy Kerrigan was leaving practice in Detroit Michigan, she was attacked by an unidentified man (Oregonian). The man hit her in the right knee with what seemed to be something like a crowbar. The right leg is the leg she uses to land stunts, which eliminated competing until it was healed (jealously). When Kerrigan was taken to the hospital, they identified no fracture, but there was swelling, bruising, and a cut. The doctor told them that it was obvious that this was a clear and purposeful attack. When the attacker was described, they recorded that he was a white male about six feet tall and around 200 pounds (jealousy). Kerrigan was still injured when the U.S. figure skating championship came around and was not allowed to compete. Her skating career was on the line (Oprah). While Kerrigan sat around waiting to heal, Harding skated to victory at the U.S. figure skating championships. All that was left to do was hope she would be able to compete in the olympics (Oprah). They both did something not approved of by their community. Through being shunned, they made themselves a better person. They recognized their wrong and tried to fix it. At the same point, the scandals they committed differed. Harding allowed family to attack an opponent in order to eliminate her toughest competition, while Hester slept with a man who was not her husband and had a baby. Along with their scandal, they were also punished a little bit differently. Hester was shunned by her community while Harding was banned for life from competitively figure skating, she was shunned by the figure skating
