At what age is it appropriate for kids to have their own cell phones? Many parents are asking these questions to themselves as their kid/kids is/are getting older. The answer to this depends on the type of kid that they have. Are they responsible enough not to break it and or lose it? Can they put their cell phone down and socialize with others? Can they not be on it and focus on what they are doing and not be distracted by when they get a notification? Many parents feel like the average Elementary school kid cannot meet all three of those questions, so many parents believe it is better for parents to get kids their own cell phones when they go to Middle school and not in Elementary school. Whenever the phone gets a notification the kids would check and see what it was. They would become distracted at the task that they were doing and it would just take them longer to finish it. In a New York Times article, it states, “Smartphones can be addictive “distractions that detract from schoolwork while exposing children to issues like online bullies, child predators or sexting.” A lot of parents agree with this statement because cell phones distract kids in school and they can miss out on an important lesson that the teacher is going over. In Newsela Article it said, “Parents have concerns that cell phones could be a distraction in the classroom or a burden for teachers. Some also worry that allowing cell phones could intensify the gap between the haves and the have-nots.” This statement relates to the statement before except this time it talks about how parents are beginning to realize that cell phones are distracting their kids from learning.
