8. There are many creative ways to introduce and focus a child’s attention on science activities. Discuss. There are several ways a teacher could introduce a topic focusing on a child’s attention through interactive science activities. First, a teacher could use a physical science activity presented as a child-sized problem needing to be solved. One example of this might be a small bin of marbles mixed in with sand. Students would have to find some sort of way to retrieve all the marbles from the sand. A second way a teacher could introduce a topic is through a spur-of-the-moment thinking game which builds student interest. An example of this may be having a “secret item” in a brown bag and the students must work together to form a hypothesis …show more content…
Because discoverer science calls for collaboration among children, it fosters the personal interactions that children with special needs often miss. However, when appropriate accommodations or modifications are made, students with special needs can, in fact, be involved in discovery science. Adapting materials to make them more manageable can enable success for a child with special needs. For example, a plastic basting syringe would be easier to use than a small medicine dropper for a child who finds it difficult to grasp objects. Bamboo toast tongs may help children with fine motor control problems to pick up small objects. Additionally, assistive technologies may help students with special needs take part in discovery science. Changes in approach are also important for children with vision and hearing impairments. Giving information in advance to these students may be one way for a teacher to adapt a lesson/materials. A child who uses a wheelchair may need to have science materials brought into close range. In general, if full participation is not doable for a child with special needs, other jobs can be assigned to those children. They could be assigned the whole of record-keeping, lab assistant, or materials-director. In having these jobs, students with special needs will still feel included in the process of learning and
