As World War I drew to a close, the modern world swung into a new era of societal breakdown and reconstruction. Examples of this are evident throughout modernist literature, both now and especially then. One of the most famous modernist literary works that came from the beginning of this movement is F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald tells the story of the inhabitants of West Egg, East Egg, New York City, and everyone in between. He is able to turn something as simple as a party into an entire plot to earn someone's affection and, what might seems like a harmless old billboard, into a symbol that is talked about on numerous occasions. He even built an opera house for her to perform in since no one else wanted her; they produced one where she would be the star. I feel like she really didn’t love him no matter how much money or how expensive the things he gave her were, maybe she did love him it just might have been he spent no time with her, just like his first wife. Throughout the whole movie, everyone goes around and always said that it seemed like he just wanted the approval and the love of others. He was taken from his loving mother and a father like person who from what it seemed to me really didn’t want him there, or him overall.

The battle to be at the top has been fought between different species and inside of species as individuals for many years. Only the vigorous and most adapted individuals are the ones that go on to strive through life, while the others die off. This is a recurring theme and concept of the evolutionary process in every species on earth. While survival of the fittest is often applied to nature and biology, the notion of survival of the fittest is applied to human beings as well. Human beings abiding to the laws of survival of the fittest can be seen throughout American literature in novels like The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer.
My parents have always told me when I made a blunder, “let it go, the only person that cares about your mistakes is you.” My interpretation of these words was, “a mistake is not worth mulling over because everyone else is not going to waste their energy by criticizing you when they have their own problems to worry over.” The depth of that advice started to reach me a few years ago. Similar to how Nick Carraway’s father’s advice led him to meeting and befriending Gatsby, the advice I was given by my parents led me to make decisions and take risks that I wouldn’t have done before.
