The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, takes place in New York in 1922. The novel is narrated by Nick Carraway, a man who moves to West Egg in order to learn the bond business. On the other side of the bay, Nick’s cousin, Daisy Buchanan, and her husband, Tom Buchanan live in East Egg. The Buchanans invite Nick over for dinner one night, where he learns that Daisy is unhappy with her marriage to Tom and that he is having an affair with another woman. Nick also meets Jordan Baker, whom he is immediately attracted to. On his way home from the Buchanans’ house, Nick sees his neighbor, a mysterious man known as Gatsby, standing at the dock reaching for a green light at the other side of the bay. As Nick concludes the flashback, Tom and Daisy attend Gatsby’s party. Tom begins to grow increasingly suspicious of Gatsby and his wife. Nick learns that after Gatsby’s rekindling meeting with Daisy, he fired all of his servants and stopped hosting parties. Later, Daisy asks Nick, Jordan and Gatsby if they would like to eat lunch with her and Tom. They agree, and at lunch, Daisy confesses her love for Gatsby, making sure her husband can hear. Tom insists that they go to the Plaza Hotel to talk about things, and becomes outraged, insisting that Gatsby is a criminal and that he used to work in a drug business. Daisy then realizes that she should stay loyal to Tom instead of Gatsby, and Tom makes Gatsby drive her home. Tom, Nick and Jordan take a separate car home, and they pass through the valley of ashes to learn that Myrtle Wilson was hit and killed by a car. Back at home, when Nick is talking to Gatsby, Nick learns that Daisy was driving the car that killed Myrtle, but Gatsby volunteered to take the blame. Tom tells Myrtle Wilson’s husband that Gatsby is the one who killed his wife. Mr. Wilson becomes engaged and finds and shoots Gatsby, then
