MARCH Graphic Novel Book Review MARCH is a nonfiction, graphic novel co-written by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell. It is widely used in schools and has won various awards, including the “Special Recognition” award at the 2014 Robert F. Kennedy Book Awards and the Coretta Scott King Author Honor from the American Library Association. The novel tells the true story of John Lewis’s involvement in the Civil Rights movement. MARCH alternates between present day 2009 and the past in the 1960’s. John Lewis is a Congressman in 2009 who is greeted by a mother and her two young boys, interested to learn about Lewis’ past. Lewis tells the family a story of how he grew up being a passionate young man interested in religion and the care for everyone and everything. Lewis became fascinated with the Civil Rights movement. He was passionate about education and attempted to desegregate the local college, Troy State. Lewis attended a workshop on non-violence conducted by Jim Lawson. Here, he learned about how to fight the evil of racism, poverty, and war through non-violence. Some of the people at the workshop decided it was time to use nonviolent tactics to fight for Civil Rights. They formed The Nashville Student Movement, and the main goal was to desegregate downtown stores and local lunch counters. They used peaceful sit-ins as protests. These sit-ins eventually led to the March on Washington on August 28, 1963. MARCH has a central theme that surrounds the evil of racism. The motif of the novel is equality. The portrayal of these themes are
