Personal Statement As a woman with an unyielding curiosity towards our world, coupled with an immense academic passion, I always have been driven to unlock the potential of both myself and that of the world in any way that I can. Resulting from my three years as a student in the School of International Service (SIS) and studying abroad in Brussels, Belgium and Nairobi, Kenya, I have developed a far more comprehensive understanding of how governments operate, as well as their role on the global landscape. I have been able to witness first-hand the impact of governments on the opportunities and quality of life in its citizens. My experience in Kenya this past semester is one that has truly stuck with me. For my final research paper for my Gender and Development class, my Kenyan Professor, Felogene Anumo and American University Kogod Professor, Siri Terjesen approached me with a great opportunity. They asked if I would research the role of Kenyan women on boards of directors via direct interviews, as well as conduct further research to aid Professor Terjesen in her own endeavors. I said yes, of course, since working with such accomplished and brilliant women is a fantastic opportunity as a young scholar. Thanks to Felogene who introduced me to her colleagues, I had the privilege of interviewing brilliant women who are trail-blazing the way for fellow women within Kenya. I was not only able to sit down and interview these women, but hear their stories of triumph and failure, contributing to my own passion for pursuing social change. With this experience, I learned an immense amount on the subject of gender equality and the impact of sexism within Kenya’s private sector. I learned the value of human to human contact, communication, listening, dedication to social change, and the value of the individual.
