Self-reflection has been something I have never been good at, nor have I taken much interest in it. I never saw the importance of such a thing. Reading Reach for the Summit, by Pat Summitt has altered my perspective on the importance of self-reflection and personal growth. Her book highlights twelve key principles that she deems the Definite Dozen. All of these principles have great importance, but the ones that spoke most to me deal with discipline, loyalty, respect, and teamwork. With the help of Summitt and her Definite Dozen, I hope to apply the principles to my life and begin my journey toward personal growth. The principle that stood out to me most was that on discipline. Chapter five of the book is titled, “Discipline Yourself So No One Else Has To” and it goes into anecdotes about how people need to practice self-discipline and govern themselves. I am by no means the fittest person on my team; however, I have not made a real effort to change that. Simply going for a run a few times per week will make an impact on my endurance. Moreover, properly fueling my body will ensure that I have the right nutrients that will sustain me through my workouts. By having the necessary accountability and doing everything it takes to be my best, I can be my best for those that depend on me. This will help foster an environment where I can be depended on and increase a sense of loyalty. Pat Summitt’s third principle was one relating to the development and demonstration of loyalty. When someone is loyal they feel a strong sense of faithfulness, support, and allegiance. Loyalty is something that is not forced or developed overnight but takes patience and tending to in order to fully develop. Moreover, it is vital to the success of relationships.
