The book, Soldier Boys, written by Walter Dean Myers is about a guy named Lonnie Jackson who loves to play basketball. He wants to become a professional basketball player and get out of Harlem. He is on a team with a coach that makes sure that Lonnie is pressured and does good. The author, Walter Dean Myers, has written over a hundred books and won the Coretta Scott King Award multiple times. Lonnie lives in Harlem, New York and hangs out at the Grant.
Growing up in a lower-middle class home, I have learned to be modest and frugal. I have also learned that nothing comes free and that everything must be earned through determination and hard work. So when I joined the Cub Scouts at age 7, I was determined to excel and achieve the highest rank in scouting, Eagle Scout. Since then, I have been intent on changing things for the better in everything I participated in. Ergo, having a lifetime goal to give back to the Earth, whether it be directly by studying chemistry to help the Earth or indirectly by donating some of my time and money back into the science field to help fund future developments of technology, seems best for the world.
Odysseus’s journey to the underworld, better known as “The Odyssey Book XI”, explores archetypal characters such as the hero, the antagonist, and the sage. Our hero in this myth, firstly, is Odysseus. Most of the plotline follows him, because he is the hero. While in the underworld, Odysseus questions his own mortality after meeting the shades of the dead. They tell him about how horrible the afterlife is, and Odysseus begins to have second thoughts about his life as he knows he will, one day, become a forgotten shade.
In the book, Soldier Boys, by Dean Hughes two boys who are on opposite sides of the war tell their struggles and stories of battle in the War and how their two different lives collide together. The author of the book, Dean Hughes, has spent 7 years doing research on World War II and finding information about the war. Dean Hughes has interviewed war veterans, studied newspapers that were written in the time of World War II, and read hundreds of books like, “The Burden of Hitler 's Legacy” by Alfons Hecks to help his understanding of this time period and events. I was in National Junior Honor Society in junior high; since then it has been a goal of mine to be in the National Honor Society in high school as well. I love helping others and getting things done when other people are not able to. I am extremely adaptable to any situation I am put in and get along very well with others. I have leadership experience in Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, I am also in a position at my job that gives me a lot of influence and leadership. At work, if people need something they will generally come to me before my boss because 95% of the time I am am able to help them.
I demonstrate my outstanding achievements in service through the clubs and teams I participate in. I’ve organized many teen outreach events targeted towards middle and high schoolers such as lock-ins and dances, but I have also organized community service events targeted for the whole base, for example barbeques. A recent example of this would be the Ramstein Color Run taking place next month. Being a Girl Scout for 7 years taught me to appreciate and enjoy taking action in the community. From a young age, I became used to helping around my community.
Pearl Harbor is just one event that has shaped American history. With this being a topic of interest to many, authors like to use it as a setting for a fictional story. As a reader, it is important to remember that when reading historical fiction, some elements of the story will be truth while others will be made up. In the book A Boy at War it would seem that the author Harry Mazer was concerned about making a book book as well as it portraying history.

When I was just a brownie, Girl Scouts was mostly about getting the prettiest patches for my sash and selling the most boxes of cookies, but over the years it has evolved into a much more meaningful activity. At the end of middle school and the start of high school, we did events such as preparing and serving meals at the Branford soup kitchen and organizing crafts for visits to the Ronald McDonald house in New Haven. Both of these events have greatly broadened my understanding of service to the community. While doing fundraisers or various drives are of unparalleled importance, literally interacting with the people my service is aimed to help allowed me to understand how donating a small fraction of time can be a way to try and better someone else’s day. Our troop has also been involved in other projects like fundraising for the local foundation Hope For Raptors, a group dedicated to protecting native birds and educating the community about them.

In many countries around the world, this is what many children have to deal with. There is an occurring issue of people across Africa and parts of Asia using children as soldiers in war. They act and take upon the roles of real combatants, causing the people of the public to act in different ways. It’s been well documented that these children have used guns and war tactics, and committed various illegal and illicit acts of violence.

Unlike most children, who go to school, they’re abducted from their families and forced into becoming a child soldier, where living conditions are beyond imaginable.
