After hearing many good opinions on the The Maze Runner by James Dashner, I decided to start reading the book before watching any of the highly-rated movies. Imagine yourself being locked in a jail cell without remembering anything except your name. Every major character—virtually all teenagers—in this book has to go through this, except they aren’t locked in a cell, they are locked in a massive maze that’s filled with monsters called “grievers” roaming the night killing anyone who crosses their path. Main character Thomas is a new member of The Glade (place in the middle of maze where everyone lives), but in three days, he is the first person ever to kill a “griever” in over three years which ultimately shows him and the rest of the Runners (people who look for a exit out of the maze) a way out of the maze. For instance, when Thomas arrives at The Glade, a minor character says “you’re the klunk [Thomas], shuck-face” and “ain’t no ticket back, bro” (3). Even though this was early in the book, the book used the same language which became easier to translate as the book went on. Also, I thought that the development of the characters was great especially for the main protagonist, Thomas. After arriving at the maze, Thomas was a frightened, frail teenager that didn’t know a clue about his life and the Glade. As the book progressed, Thomas became courageous and clever with powerful instincts like “But nothing about this place made any sense. Except for one thing. He was supposed to be a Runner” (39).
