In Barbara Kingsolver’s The Poisonwood Bible the Price family follows their missionary father, Nathan Price, to the Congo. Throughout the novel the children start out excited for the trip, but as time goes on they are longing to go home. Leah Price, the middle daughter, starts off ready for the journey and the new things she will learn and find and even though she is a girl from Bethlehem, Georgia she doesn’t hesitate to do anything to fit in. The surroundings, culture and people in the Congo begin to change her and she learns how to do new things and is enlightened in what she believes. The Congo starts to have an influence on her life and she changes to fit in with her surroundings.

“I found I could hardly remember Anatole’s face, and couldn’t picture God at all. He just ended up looking like my father.”(Kingsolver 422). This quote represents how strongly God was associated with her father and how when she lost touch with him she also lost touch with God. Anatole and the culture around her begin to affect her moral traits. Leah travels with her father to see the first democratically elected president of the Congo and there she realizes how important justice is to her. Leah begins to learn more about the Congo and their fight for independence from Anatole bringing them closer together. When the ants come and swarm the village the price family is terrified and has no idea how to handle the situation. On the boat with Anatole Leah says “God hates us. (Kingsolver 308). Leah saying this marks the transition of her believing that God cares about every human being and knows what's best for mankind and would never harm them to blaming him for what's wrong with the world as a whole and losing her beliefs in him more. The events around her changed her moral beliefs in
