The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls is a remarkable memoir which shows the importance of acceptance and perseverance. The author and her three siblings grew up poor and were forced to try to support themselves, as their parents were unable to provide any form of stability for their kids. I had decided to read the book for many reasons and am glad that I decided to do so as it is an inspiring story. It had allowed me to see things through a different perspective and has changed my view on life.

There were many reasons why I chose to read The Glass Castle as my summer reading book. Prior to reading the recommended books for summer reading, I had already heard of the memoir and its quickly growing popularity. After reading a few memoirs and autobiographies for school, I had become interested in them and planned on reading more of this genre. Additionally, I had learned that the novel was being adapted into a movie. I wanted to be able to compare the book to the movie and witness how the author had seen these events. I have not yet seen the movie but am hoping to experience it very soon.

Jeannette Walls’ The Glass Castle is a thought provoking story. The twists and turns in her life make you change your thoughts and opinions constantly. The memoir begins with Walls burning herself as a child while she was cooking and being forced to go to a hospital where she was later snuck out of by her family. It had changed numerous thoughts on my life and I am glad that I was able to read it. I would gladly recommend that anyone else read it and hope that they experience a change in thoughts, similar to what I had undergone. I will take with me the messages of perseverance, acceptance and love that Walls had told us all
