How Type 1 Diabetes Impacted Jay Cutler “Diabetes is something you go to sleep with and wake up with every day” (ESPN Chicago). This is what Jay Cutler said when referring to his disease. Cutler was diagnosed with type one diabetes in 2008 while playing with the Chicago Bears. Type one diabetes can be a struggle to overcome by anyone, but if one treats it right, one can move past it, just like Jay Cutler has done. Symptoms are important in diabetes because they can be the ones that decide if you have it or not. Some symptoms of diabetes can include weight loss (Platt et al.). Eye damage can affect a person by taking away some of their vision, or can even make them blind. It is rare that a person with diabetes can get affected by eye damage, but it can still happen to anybody with it. Another main complication of diabetes is kidney damage. Kidney damage is not a good situation to deal with. It can keep people out of almost anything, and for Cutler, it was football. Kidney damage can lead to loss of function of your kidneys, and in the long term that is bad (Mayo Clinic Staff). Jay Cutler is famous because of his accomplishments and his inspiration he got on and off the football field. Not only did he play football, he was a quarterback (“Type 1 diagnosis”). Being an NFL quarterback is something impossible for most people. Less than four percent of college players get drafted into the league. Cutler had to grind and work as hard as he could to get to the point where he wanted to be. This program was special to Cutler and represented him. It consisted of every touchdown he threw he gave 1,000 dollars to charity (ESPN Chicago). Diabetes is a problem for whoever encounters it, even for a talented athlete such as Jay Cutler. Thankfully, however, diabetes is a treatable disease. Taking care of oneself and being persistent, like Cutler has done, will give others the same success in dealing with diabetes.
