Imperialism in India
India gained its independence from the British in 1947, using the action of imperialism allowed the British to take over India. Imperialism is the act of one nation containing greater power having the ability to take over a nation of lesser power. Although the British established a strong and powerful government, built some of the finest universities and museums, and created 10,000 miles of infrastructure. The British created the government to keep the people of India in their place, built some of the finest museums for the smartest students, and built infrastructure for the transportation of British goods.
In addition, the British established a strong government for the people of India. According to Dr. Lalvani, India had no uniform government but their government paved the way for the British to rule for almost two centuries. Furthermore, Dr. Lalvani claims that Indians success as the world's largest democracy was largely due to British imperial rule. However, the British ruled for a hundred years and did nothing for the people of India, the British gave them no responsibility for their own government (Doc #1). On the other hand, during the British rule only 9.5% of the people in India could read and write at most. It wasn't until 1941/ 1951 that the percentages started to rapidly grow (Doc #5). Once India gained its independence was when the real growth of education began to peak. There is no room to argue that the British created some of the finest universities however, those universities sent children home with British ideas that never got
