In this essay I will be explaining how society was in 1930’s America and how people were being treated in the 1930’s based on the depression, racism, misogyny, names, power and the American dream. Firstly of Mice and Men was written in the 1930’s and was set in California. In 1930’s America, faced a problem which was known as the depression. This meant that when one business went down all the workers became unemployed, so no-one had any money. Also all of the secondary business went down too, so nobody bought anything so all the workers were unemployed. Afterwards the businesses which relied on others, for example cars rely on tyres so if the tyre business went down then the car business would have to go down. This happened all over America and had a huge knock-off effect on the farmers as they need a lot of farmers to grow crops. This was all because of a financial disaster, and all of the countries around the world were involved and lasted for a decade. An example of this is in ‘Of Mice and Men’ is “Crooks the negro stable book.” This shoes that people only see Crooks as his disability, colour or his job. Steinbeck does this because he wanted to shoe others that when it came to jobs black people struggled more than white people. The word ‘negro’ connotes that no-one really has respect for Crooks because he was black.
