In this poem, the main claim is not to judge people based on their skin color and to get to know them and collaborate with them before making any assumptions. In the poem, it says that “He got up and walking over to the boy said: what's your name?” That tells us that after Hilton (One of the main characters) and Durmont (The other main character) worked together and collaborated, Hilton brought out the best in Durmont by showing him that no matter what his skin color is, He is just as smart as any other white man. Later on, He says “You could have great opportunities for inventive talent and in my concern, you shall have your chance and go as far as your efficiency will carry you. What do you say, would you care for it?”

In 1773, there were slaves all over colonial America working in plantations, and cleaning their masters houses. It wasn’t common for a slave to be writing poetry with their owners consent. Phyllis Wheatley’s success as the first African American published poet was what inspired generations to tell her story. It was her intellectual mind and point of view that made her different from others, both black and white. There was hardly anything a black man could say to change the minds of an all white jury. However, ways were being sought to end the discrimination throughout America. Changes were being found in the way white people viewed others from different races with different color skin.
“Tableau” and “Incident” by Countee Cullen were written in the early 1900’s during the Harlem Renaissance. They both show racial interactions and reveal others reactions to the communications. The themes of “Incident” and “Tableau” are shown by the use of figurative language and tone in the poems. The figurative language in both the poems is very distinct.
For example in the article, the man with the dirty white beard; He spoke about how he was a poor white uneducated person. In that time period if you were poor and uneducated you were most likely a slave, forgetting that some whites was in the same predicament. When thinking of the bigger picture does race matter, race matter and also didn’t matter when involving education. Race mattered because uneducated people were thought to be blacks, education was easily given to the black as it was for the poor whites. However race didn’t matter in the same aspect because education was taught, black or white you were not born with elite knowledge.

I say that because in the text it said “ he is so pale with his whiteness then and i am sok colored”(paragraph 9, page 3).That piece of evidence shows the differences between the two because when it said it he was so pale with his whiteness it was referring to the fact that he is in a different world and doesn't know the struggle.
In contrary though, they sometimes write about matters happening around them. The poet Terrance Hayes from South Carolina, has a very literal poem called “Talk”. The poem “Talk”, is about a young African American boy in middle school. This boy is on his school’s basketball team.
To understand the real meaning of a literary work, we need to look into the meaning of each word and why the author has chosen these particular words and not different ones. Close reading of literary works helps us understand the author’s thinking and understanding of the time they lied in. One of the American poet and author of the 18th century, Phillis Wheatley, she was one of the most famous poets who changed the life of most Americans. Wheatley’s most famous poem is “On Being Brought from Africa to America”. To look in more detail into this specific poem, first thing is the language that she uses, second the form and style of the poem, and lastly what message she is trying to get to her audience.
