As a student of physics and mathematics, I want to talk about a prevailing problem in this field. There has been a decreasing interest in the field of physics and mathematics among the young minds to pursue it as a career. At Howard University’s department of physics and mathematics, the number of students is lower than any other departments. The number of students in Engineering is significantly larger; Chemistry and Biology also have appropriate number of students. Those who want to pursue medical fields or go to industrial market tend to choose chemistry or biology. Lucrative job prospects, attract students to pursue engineering and computer science. This is just an example of Howard University; the problem is across the nation which needs attention. Since the number of students from the US declined, U.S universities and market rely on large number of foreign students in this field. One obvious aspect that needs to be considered is the education system in the US. I completed my high school in a foreign country, and I feel the high school curriculum and teaching system had an important impact on me to choose this field and prepared me well for college. Understanding science and math is not a natural talent; it can be taught for which the education that you receive in school plays a crucial role. According to TIMSS, an international comparison of student’s performance in mathematics and sciences done by National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the U.S has been lagging behind countries like Japan, Israel, Korea, Finland, and England. High school education should work as a bridge for a student going into college, so the government should consider modernizing the high school education system
