When I think of this time it is about African American poets being recognized, using poems to tell people about their lives, or motivational time periods. During the time of the Harlem Renaissance Claude McKay, James Weldon Johnson, and Georgia Douglas Johnson all used their poems to shed light on problems in society. These three poets that I picked used writing as a creative outlet to share about their life experiences and what they were going through at the time. This poem sheds the light on racism, and how African Americans are treated on a normal daily basis. McKay uses this poem to explain that he wants to die in a way that is honorable and respected. He shed the light on death for African Americans and that they want to be remembered for something. In addition to Cluade McKay, another African American poet is James Weldon Johnson. Johnson uses his poems to shed light on problems in society.
