The adventures of Huckleberry Finn by writer Mark Twain is a very divisive book and the reason for that is because of it controversy with racism. It is banned from lots of school because they believe that it could make a lot of students uncomfortable. Maybe making them uncomfortable is a good thing. High school students can see how it was like back then for the black people and how they were treated. They weren 't treated as humans at all.
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an American classic, it was the starting point for all great American Literature. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been awarded all of these honorable titles because of its abnormal and controversial plot line. During the time period when the book was written, it was unacceptable to view African- American’s as anything other than slaves. They were viewed as inferior to whites and were treated like property, they had no rights. The main character of the book, Huck, disagrees and disobeys these norms and pushes the boundaries of society when he becomes friends with a slave from his childhood; Jim.
The social and historical norms of the time was in no doubt influential to the critics. As far as historical norms, The Hartford Courant refers to Jim as a runaway “N” word, a term that is no longer acceptable in our society. Historically, the term “runaway” is referring to the recent abolition of slavery, although still not fully over 20 years later. It was normal for white people to refer to black people using derogatory terms. The reason why the story “Huckleberry Finn” was a significant piece of literature was because it was unrealistic for a white boy to be friends with a runaway black man.
All the complaints against the book were for being racist, and it is not a racist novel if you have the right understanding of the time period. People argued among one another about whether the novel should be kept in classrooms or not, and people just do not understand. Some people are not as extreme with their ideas about the novel but some do believe it has no right to be taught it in classroom. For example, “University of Pittsburgh English Professor Jonathan Arac, author of “Huckleberry Finn as Idol and Target: The Function of Criticism in out Time,” agrees that the book should be removed from required reading lists.

During the 1800’s slavery was a huge part of the south. Huck is just a regular southern boy who chose to help a slave run away to be free. We are able to see just how stereotypical and racist white people were in the past. A majority of the people in the south viewed blacks as inferior, or below them in social ranking. They ordered around their slaves and treated them with little respect at times. Although The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn can make students feel “uncomfortable," it is beneficial for students to read it.

But it is up to us to prepare our children for what they have to meet, and, hopefully, we shall overcome.” She describes that the future of our world has to be aware of things that have happened in the past, such as racism. The NAACP, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, is a civil rights organization that displayed their position on this certain situation. The NAACP position is correct in that Mark Twain’s un-sanitized version of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn should be taught because the book describes the important awareness of the historical oppression of people, it provides a value of morality from that time period that students should learn, and gives an important lesson about race that should be taught to students.

As said by Eugene Ionesco, “Ideologies separate us. Dreams and anguish bring us together.” Ideas about others are often created by the lack of knowledge of someone or having learned these ideas from an outside source; those ideas end up creating a gap in our society. The way in which we can counter that is through suffering and dealing with those ideas, and believing that some time in the future we can mend the gap and promote equality with one another.
