Criticism of "Huckleberry Finn" is not a new thing. Teachers in modern times gathered together for a discussion on the novel. In recent years the book has come under attack for the use of the word "nigger". The word does not mean the same today as it did a century ago. It is not an easy task to get high school students to really understand the historical value of the book. It was said the book needed to be taught in context. They agreed they would know their students liked the book when they actually read it.

Mark Twain wrote "Huck Finn" during a time when black identity wasn't yet defined. White people looked upon them as not human and not haing a soul. Blacks had been granted citizenship in 1870. Post Civil War Reconstruction failed badly
